An apartment in a complex of fifty apartments, in Breidholt Reykjavík, was severely damaged in a fire yesterday. Police suspect someone started the fire on purpose. Other inhabitants in the complex have recently asked for the eviction of the apartment’s inhabitants.
The fire was successfully put out by the fire department according to the authorities, Fréttabladid reported.
“It was a major operation because there are fifty apartments in the building. There were no people in the apartment where the fire occurred,” said Ólafur Ingi Grettisson, deputy fire chief in Reykjavík.
All inhabitants of the apartment block were asked to stay calm in their apartments whilst the fire was put out. According to police the fire was started in two separate places in the apartment which points to arson.
Police have been called upon many times to interfere with the inhabitants of the apartment which is owned by Reykjavík’s welfare department.
Helga Kristín Sigurdardottir, chairman of the inhabitants association in the apartment block said that the persons living in the apartment had been impossible tenants. They had been completely out of order because of addiction and that other inhabitants in the complex had been scared of them. “Our lawyer has been working at having these people evicted,” Sigurdardóttir said.
