Fire broke out in the old farm built of turf at Laufás in Eyjafjördur between nine and ten on Sunday night. The farmhouse is a popular motive on pictures showing 18th century Iceland.

The priest in Laufás, Bolli Pétur Bollason said that smoke had come up from the chimney. “A very quick reaction prevented a disaster,” he told mbl.is. We needed to fight the fire from inside, but the roof also had to be broken. The firemen from Akureyri and Grenivík jointly fought the fire.”
Bollason said the damage was not great and that they could be repaired and luckily the fire was prevented from spreading around the old farm. His son was the first to come to the scene of the fire and start putting it out.
It is not clear what caused the fire, but it may have been caused by the sun overheating tar in a window. Bollason said that the fire was not caused by carelessness.
