A fish processing facility at Miðhraun in the Snæfellsnes peninsula is severely damaged after a fire that was discovered this morning, RÚV reports. Fire fighters successfully contained the fire.
A truck driver who drove past the buildings at 5 am this morning was the first one to notice the fire. He reported it to the emergency line, 112, which called out all available fire fighters in Snæfellsnes, Borgarnes and Akranes.
The fire spread rapidly through the large buildings. Borgarnes Fire Chief Bjarni Þorsteinsson explained that the processing facility is located in three buildings. “When the first men arrived, there was fire in a large building which was engulfed in flames, and it had spread to the next one. Then we managed to stop the fire by a fire wall which is on a connecting annex to the largest building. That one will escape.”
An excavator was used to tear down the walls of the burning buildings to access the flames.
The facility was mainly used for drying fish heads.
