Fire in Akureyri Garage

Widespread damage has been caused by a fire last night at a car repair workshop in Akureyri, North Iceland.

The fire brigade was called out to Fjölnisgata 6 at around 12.30 last night following a call warning of a major fire. One person had been working on the premises at the time, but he managed to escape the building safely and call for help. He had been welding.

The man was taken to hospital for recuperation, but is not injured, Vísir reports.

Firefighters worked hard to contain the blaze and prevent it spreading to other workshops within the building—a task which went largely to plan, according to the duty chief.

Ironically, given the circumstances, some nearby workshops suffered water damage, but were saved from fire damage. The roof of the building also had to be broken in to help dowse the fire.

Five units were damaged, though most of the damage is centered on the car repair workshop. The fire brigade left the scene at 04.30 this morning. There had been 15 firefighters on scene, with help from the fire crew at nearby Akureyri airport.
