Fire erupted in the old freezing plant in Siglufjörður, North Iceland, last night, RÚV reports. Among other things, the building houses the brewery Segull 67, but the brewery was not damaged. The fire was reported at 6 pm, and fire fighters completed their job half an hour past midnight. Damage from smoke is said to be substantial, and the siding of the building is damaged as well.
Fire Chief Ámundi Gunnarsson stated that the fire erupted in the insulation of an old freezer unit. “It’s insulated with cork and glued with tar. This is extremely flammable, and on top of that, this was hard to access, since we could only enter through one door, which was next to impossible due to smoke.”
The building is made of concrete and covered with corrugated iron.
