Fire fighters were called to Laugarvegur 84, Reykjavík’s main shopping street, yesterday evening to put out a fire in a third-floor apartment.
The fire was successfully put out. No one was harmed, but the apartment was badly damaged. Morgunbladid reports.
According to the watch officer on duty, this was a difficult call-out as the heat of the fire had become so extreme that even the ceiling was on fire.
Fire fighters had to crawl on their knees and cool the air in front of them to exterminate the fire and managed to do so just in time, before the fire spread to other apartments in the building.
According to police, only the one apartment caught fire, but a next-door apartment was damaged by smoke. The inhabitants of the building managed to get out on their own.
Police in Reykjavík has started an investigation to determine what started the fire.
