Fire Destroys House in Downtown Reykjavík

By Iceland Review

The timber building at Klapparstígur 17 in central Reykjavík was destroyed in a fire on Thursday night. The building’s nine inhabitants made a narrow escape and people were also asked to evacuate neighboring houses.

“It was so close that you cannot be anything else than relieved when you got out. It was a matter of minutes,” Svala Eyjólfsdóttir, one of three young women who rented the apartment on the second story of the building, told Morgunbladid.

All of their belongings were destroyed in the fire. The friends had planned to move out of the apartment at the end of the month, “But we hadn’t moved anything. Everything is gone except for the pajamas I’m wearing,” Eyjólfsdóttir said.

The fire was reported around 2:30 am. At one point flames flew several meters outside the windows. It is unclear how the fire started, but its origin was on the ground floor. Demolition began on Friday evening.
