Finding Those he Photographed 30 Years Ago

A photographer who 30 years ago photographed a number of young people on the 200th anniversary of the City of Reykjavík is now hoping to photograph the same people again, provided he can find them. He promises those who pose for him again a copy of both the old and new pictures.

Guðmundur Ingólfsson set up a tent in the city center on August 18, 1986, where he took the photos you can view here. Check them out and see if you recognize anyone. They clearly show how fashion has changed in three decades. Clothes are bulkier than today and shoulder pads common. People’s hairdos are also different: long bangs and often highlighted.

He posted the photos on flickr in hopes of finding the people again and told mbl.is, “I’ve received about 14 emails with information about names and phone numbers, but it would be fun to get 25-30 names. Then I could make a real series of photos out of it.” All in all, there are 73 photos of between 120 and 150 people.

Among the responses Guðmundur got is one from three friends (above) who all live in the same apartment building and would love to pose again. Also, a couple he photographed on their first date were in touch to tell him they’re married and plan to celebrate the 30th anniversary of their first date in August.

Guðmundur plans to start photographing in March. Hopefully, he’ll be done by August 18th, on the city’s 230th anniversary.
