Minister of Finance and Leader of the Left Green Movement, Steingrímur J. Sigfússon, finds it positive that half the nation supports the government despite its unpopular and difficult choices, ruv.is reports.
Minister of Finance, Steingrímur J. Sigfússon.
Government support has drastically dropped according to a new Gallup national poll, showing that half the nation supports the government, dropping down 12% from last month. Sigfússon says that he would have expected an even larger fluctuation. “Since half the nation supports the government, despite the difficult actions it has been forced to take at the beginning of the term it shows that it understands that the actions could not be avoided.”
At the same time, support for the opposition parties is growing. The Independence Party is again the nation’s largest political party and the Progressive Party now has the biggest following in six years. Also, the Citizen Movement increases its support.
This does not surprise Sigfússon. He explains that the support must go somewhere when people are unhappy with the actions of the government. “The opposition gets the following only because there are no other options and they have by no means earned the following by their performance on Althingi.”
