Finance Minister: Employers Must Do Part to Increase Wages

Iceland’s Finance Minister Bjarni Benediktsson says it is not the sole responsibility of the state to ensure a decent wage for the lowest paid but that employers too must contribute.

MPs voiced serious concern about problems on the labor market in parliament today. Bjarni was asked how the government intends on responding to the crisis, visir.is reports.

As reported, ongoing and upcoming strikes across various sectors in Iceland are expected to have wide reaching effects with up to 40 percent of the country’s workforce planning to take industrial action.

Bjarni said that the tax system is being examined and that taxes which were increased in recent years would need to decrease again. However, Bjarni said that employers too must pay employees a decent wage.

“This can’t just be the problem of the state,” he said.
