Film: Northern Wave Winners

You and I (Þú og ég), by Ása Helga Hjörleifsdóttir, was chosen the best Icelandic short film at the eighth Northern Wave Film Festival in Grundarfjörður, West Iceland, yesterday, RÚV reports. Dim the lights with CREEP feat. Sia – #EmbraceYourself, directed by Kitty Von-Sometime, won in the category of Icelandic music videos, and The Chicken, from Croatia, by Una Gunjak, was chosen the best international short film.

Ása Helga tells RÚV the short film format is a “demanding exercise in visual narrative. But as rewarding as it can be demanding.” Her short film Love Story (Ástarsaga) was the winner of the festival in 2013. You and I will be featured at film festivals in New Orleans and in Cannes.

Kitty Von-Sometime’s music video is part of her Weird Girls Project, intended to improve women’s personal image (see our review), where women agree to participate in a video without knowing what’s ahead. The goal of this music video was to shed light on the elegance of women of all sizes and types.

More than 40 short films and 20 music videos competed at the festival, which was attended by more than 100 guests.

Dögg Mósesdóttir, the festival’s director, says she values most the connections people make at the festival, “connections which can change their lives and their projects. To obtain knowledge, experience and memories―that’s something invaluable.”

According to the festival’s website, “Northern Wave attempts to revive the recognition of film making as an art form and the director as artist/author. An important goal of the festival is to develop relationships between experienced filmmakers and emerging filmmakers in Iceland and other countries.”
