Fight over Ram Insemination Book at Elderly Homes

The book of rams 2013-2014 has just been released in Iceland with information about the 47 rams sheep farmers can buy sperm from at the sheep insemination stations around the country.

For many, this is the book of the year; the sheep farmers’ bible, according to mbl.is.

The mating time for sheep is December and the sheep insemination stations are open from December 1 to 21.

It is not only sheep farmers who read the book, Torfi Bergsson, who works at the West Iceland Sheep Insemination Station, told mbl.is. “I have heard stories that people at elderly homes are fighting over the book.”

Last year 16,927 sheep were inseminated with sperm from the West Iceland station and 226 portions of frozen semen were exported to the U.S. This year they will also export to Norway.

All the rams are equal without any of them standing out, Torfi said. Thirty out of 47 have horns.
