Fewer Tourists at Iceland’s International Airport

Fewer foreign tourists passed through Keflavík International Airport in February this year compared to the same month in 2008, 18,000 down from 20,000, respectively. That comes in addition to a significant drop in Icelandic tourists going abroad through the airport.

The number of Icelanders traveling via Keflavík Airport dropped by 50 percent. In February 2009, approximately 15,000 Icelandic tourists passed through the airport, compared to 32,000 in February 2008, Morgunbladid reports.

When single market areas are concerned, tourists from all areas have decreased except from North America, where tourists increased by ten percent. Danish tourists also increased slightly—the only Nordic nation whose number of tourists to Iceland has increased.
