The number of Icelanders living in rental housing has dropped by 3.5 percent over the past 12 months, mbl.is reports. Those living with their parents have, on the other hand, increased by almost 2 percent.
The figures come from a recent survey by Market and Media Research Iceland.
In total, 18.3 percent of respondents live in rental housing and 10 percent with their parents, compared with 21.8 percent and 8.1 percent respectively in 2016.
There has also been a significant reduction in the number of tenants who stated they had a ‘very secure’ lease agreement. Those who say they have a ‘relatively secure’ rental agreement have, on the other hand, increased.
Of those living in rental housing, 81 percent stated they felt their housing was safe. This represents a five percent decrease from 2013, when 86 percent of tenants in rental housing believed their homes were safe.
The percentage of those who felt they might lose their housing was 19 percent. Of that group, 10 percent believed it was very likely, while 9 percent believed it was rather likely.
Those between 18-29 years old were the most likely of any age group to live in rental housing. Of that group, 38 percent lived in rental housing, while 37 percent lived with their parents.
