Festival Weekend Mostly Successful

Most outdoor festivals that were held in various parts of Iceland last weekend, during the so-called Merchants’ Weekend (which is infamous for excessive drinking), were considered successful, although there were a few incidents of assault and drug-taking.

In Akureyri two women sought emergency treatment following incidents of rape, but they have not filed reports to police yet. In the Westman Islands police were involved with 17 drug-related cases and six assaults, which they said had not been serious, Fréttabladid reports.

Search and rescue teams in the Westman Islands also had to assist three young men who intended to sail to the islands from Thorlákshöfn. Their boat was poorly equipped and was reported lost near the islands, but local emergency services found the three sailors and escorted them to shore.

Fog delayed flights from the Westman Islands yesterday. Around 13,000 people attended the local “National Festival” which is the largest since it was first held in 1874.
