Festival Goers Weather-bound in West Fjords

Many of the guests at the free music festival Aldrei fór ég suður in Ísafjörður, the West Fjords, at Easter were unable to return to their homes yesterday due to heavy snowfall; only 150 of the 300 passengers with Air Iceland from Ísafjörður made it.

However, the airline’s sales and marketing director Ingi Þór Guðmundsson told Morgunblaðið that all will be able to fly today.

Those traveling by car also encountered difficulties due to snow cover on roads and poor visibility.

There was heavy traffic on the mountain pass Steingrímsfjarðarheiði where the situation was worst—500 cars passed through it yesterday—and members of the search and rescue union Dagrenning from Hólmavík had to assist a number of drivers who had run off the road.

The police in the West Fjords were also busy assisting travelers; people were asked to stay put unless it was absolutely necessary for them to drive yesterday.
