Father-in-law and son-in-law together in parliament

Einar Oddur Kristjánsson, an MP for the Independence Party, and his son-in-law, Illugi Gunnarsson, both have a seat in parliament, which is the first time in 55 years a father-in-law and his son-in-law are both MPs simultaneously.

According to Helgi Bernódusson, the office manager of the Althingi parliament, this has not occurred since Ásgeir Ásgeirsson, who later became the second president of Iceland, and his son-in-law Gunnar Thoroddsen were both MPs almost continuously between 1934 and 1952, Fréttabladid reports.

Gunnarsson said he is looking forward to working with his father-in-law in parliament. Gunnarsson and Kristjánsson are both MPs for the Independence Party but do not always agree, they said.
