A man in his early fifties on a kayak drowned off Herdísarvík in Southwest Iceland yesterday afternoon. A driver on Suðurstrandavegur noticed the kayak upside down and immediately called the emergency services.
Search and rescue from Þorlákshöfn rushed to the scene and called for a Coast Guard helicopter, which was about to go on a practice flight and was therefore quick to arrive, visir.is reports.
The man was brought to land but attempts to resuscitate him were unsuccessful. The cause of the accident is unknown. The man was traveling alone.
