Fatal car crash near Laugarvatn

A man in his late twenties died when he crashed his car near Laugarvatn in the south of <?xml:namespace prefix = st1 ns = “urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:smarttags” />Iceland yesterday morning.<?xml:namespace prefix = o ns = “urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:office” />

According to Fréttabladid daily, the driver passed a police car shortly before the crash. When the police tried to stop the car, the driver increased the speed. After a short chase the police decided to call it off. A few minutes later, the police officers saw smoke in the distance. They rushed immediately to the scene where they found the car badly damaged and the driver dead inside it. He is thought to have lost control of the car so it went tumbling off the road.

The man is the sixth person to die in a traffic accident in Iceland this year.
