A woman died after a car accident in Seyðisfjörður, the East Fjords, shortly before midnight on Tuesday. She was a passenger in the car. The driver, also a woman, survived the accident but is being kept unconscious on a ventilator, Vísir reports.
The women, 17 and 21 years old, are both from Seyðisfjörður. They were transported by ambulance to Egilsstaðir and then to the Landspítali National University Hospital in Reykjavík by plane. The driver was pronounced dead on arrival at the hospital, mbl.is reports.
According to Vísir, the driver lost control of the car on a gravel road on the northern side of the fjord. The car plunged off the escarpment ten meters down and landed on its wheels. The passenger was thrown out of the car while the driver was stuck in the wreckage. Search and rescue workers had to cut her out of the vehicle. The police and fire services also took part in the recovery process.
A memorial was held in the church in Seyðisfjörður last night. The town’s priest, Sigríður Rún Tryggvadóttir, said that the community was grieving and that the accident had had an effect on everyone. “This is such a small community that it touches everyone,” she told Vísir.
