One person died in an accident on Holtavörðuheiði mountain pass yesterday afternoon, according to the West Iceland Police. The accident occurred at about 2:30 pm.
A northbound passenger car collided with a southbound 4×4, resulting in the death of the driver of the passenger car. The driver and passenger of the 4×4 escaped with minor injuries. They were transported by the National Coast Guard helicopter to Landspítali National University Hospital for examination.
Conditions at the accident site were very difficult: there was a snowstorm and blowing snow, and the road was snow-covered and icy.
Holtavörðuheiði is the main passage between the north and the south. It was closed while police worked on the scene, but has been reopened.
