A fatal accident occurred yesterday when a foreign tourist in his fifties fell into a deep river which runs through an ice cave in Breiðamerkurjökull, Southeast Iceland. The man had been photographing the cave when he suddenly fainted and fell into the river.
The man, a German citizen who was an experienced mountaineer who had explored other Icelandic ice caves in the past, had been with a professional guide at the time of the accident, mbl.is reports.
Another guide with two tourists was in the ice cave at the same time of the accident.
The group helped to retrieve the man from the river but he died before a team of 40 search and rescue workers could reach the scene.
