Fast and Furious Car into Lake Mývatn

Lake Mývatn is nothing but tranquil these days. The replica of a car will be sunk in the lake soon and special Styrofoam replicas of icebergs put up in preparation for the filming of Fast 8, the eighth of The Fast and the Furious action movies, RÚV reports. The Environment Agency of Iceland oversees the activities.

Filming will take place on the southern part of the frozen lake, which is red-listed among protected areas, believed to be under a lot of strain, among other things because of tourist traffic. Thus, a special permit was required from the Environment Agency to start filming.

On top of the ice, luxury cars are expected to race, which is why the lake is being cleared of snow. The replica which will be sunk will reportedly only be a frame, without any polluting agents. Divers will ensure the frame doesn’t sink to the bottom, by connecting it with wires to floating devices.

Óskar Pétursson, director of the local council welcomes the activity in the area, especially at this time of year. Almost all hotels near the lake are fully booked and contractors are busy getting the area ready for filming.
