Farmers want swans off protected species list

Farmers’ association Búnadarsamtök Vesturlands have requested that swans be removed from the list of protected species in Iceland, as their numbers have grown to problematic levels over the past few years. According to farmers, swans are increasingly destroying fields and grounds by picking at them. This is reported by RÚV online.

According to a spokesman for the association, the situation has become intolerable, with swans descending on fields in groups numbering dozens or even hundreds. The Icelandic swan stock is made up of some 21,000 swans.
