Farmers Save Domestic Animals

Sigurdur Gunnarsson, farmer in Hnappavellir in Öræfasveit, south of the eruption told that the farmers now stress the need to save the domestic animals. He said that so far most of the animals are still outside but that may change later in the day.

Gunnarsson said that it was difficult to drive in some areas because of the ash. Visibility is low because the ash starts blowing when you drive through it. It also causes discomfort and it is necessary to wear masks outdoors.

Last night masks and safety glasses were distributed in the area, mostly to farmers but also to tourists staying at farms and hotels. During the night the wind was still and the ash did not bother rescue workers and almost nobody was travelling. “We met one car and had to stop because of the ash that follows its trail.

In many areas the ash is going into houses and sets in windowsills.
