According to the capital region fire department, the family was able to get out of the building on their own and report the fire, mbl.is reports.
The apartment is inside a modified industrial building. The fire marshal on duty said the fire hadn’t been extensive but that the whole building had filled with smoke.
The fire was extinguished and the building ventilated.
In other news, a Coast Guard helicopter brought a fisherman from a Russian trawler located 260 nautical miles off Reykjavík who had fallen ill to Landspítali, the national hospital, early this morning.
According to mbl.is, his condition was not life threatening but he needed to get to a hospital. The Coast Guard reported that the transfer had gone well.
