The residents’ swift reactions averted disaster but the house suffered damage nonetheless. A family of five was sleeping in the house, including two children.

The Borgarbyggd Fire Department was summoned around six o’clock this morning. The inhabitants had been awoken by a smoke detector and immediately reported the smoke.

The home owner used water from a hot tub to wet the wood, which was very dry due to the current drought. Then, he used a fire extinguisher to contain the fire, which had started beneath the patio.

The fire had been fully extinguished a half an hour after the incident was reported.

According to the Borgarnes police, it is a blessing that the situation went so smoothly. The swift responses by both the owner and the fire brigade were crucial.
