False Description of Assailants in Westman Islands

A woman in her late teens who was attacked on the streets of Heimaey in the Westman Islands on Sunday morning has withdrawn her testimony that the perpetrators were two young men of foreign origin. The police had called for witnesses.

According to the local police, during the case’s investigation, it turned out that the woman’s description was false, Fréttabladid reports.

She reported the attack to the police on Sunday afternoon and filed charges against two men who she said had harassed her sexually and torn off her pantyhose before she got away.

She described them as being in their twenties, around 180 centimeters tall, provided details on their appearance and clothing and said she believed they were of foreign origin.

The woman had visible bruises so it is indisputable that she was attacked, the police state.

However, after withdrawing her testimony, she has not disclosed the identity of the real perpetrator(s) and although the case is still under investigation, the police say little can be done until she is prepared to provide them with information about the assault.
