Despite its name, Iceland has a rather mild climate in winter. The average temperature in December is -0.2°C (32°F) and -1.9°C (29°F) in Akureyri. The next few days, however, will be much colder, according to the forecast.
The Iceland Met Office is expecting the weather to cool off considerably later this week. Starting tomorrow, Wednesday, the temperature will fall to below -10°C (14°F) and on Thursday we will see such temperatures in various places in the north and east. In Reykjavík it will reach -13° C at midnight on Wednesday. In the highlands the temperature is expected to fall to -21° C.
Some examples of how cold it will get over the next few days: Borgarnes -20° C, Egilsstaðir -15° C, Akureyri -15° C and Ísafjörður -15° C.
Near gale or gale force winds are forecast in the south on Saturday with snow and later sleet or rain becoming warmer with temperature of 0°C to 5°C by the evening. On Sunday the temperature is expected to be above 0°C again in most places around the country.
