The US has sent a notice to Iceland suggesting that the former chess great Bobby Fischer could possibly be extradited.<?xml:namespace prefix = o ns = “urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:office” />
The Chief of Police received a “red notice” from Interpol in Washington DC that said the US was considering extraditing Fischer back to the US where he is wanted for violating UN sanctions. The notice was forwarded to the Ministry of Justice, reports Morgunbladid’s website.
Fischer, who was recently granted Icelandic citizenship, arrived in Iceland on Thursday night from Japan, where he had been in prison since last July.
The outspoken Fischer has caused a great deal of controversy since he arrived. Fischer uttered racist comments against Jews at a press conference held last Friday which, according to the head of Iceland’s Human Rights Office, violate Icelandic law.
It is believed that Fischer could be fined or even inprisoned for his remarks.
