Today, the Reykjavík Metropolitan Police plans to request an extension of police custody of the man suspected in the death of Birna Brjánsdóttir, the 20-year-old woman who disappeared in downtown Reykjavík on January 14 and whose body was found in Reykjanes eight days later.
Police custody of the suspect expires at 4 pm today, but altogether, he has been in isolation for four weeks, or ever since he was arrested, suspected of murder.
Police authorities and the prosecution have twelve weeks from the day of arrest to file charges if a suspect is to be in police custody until arraigned, RÚV reports.
No confession has been made, and Chief Superintendent Grímur Grímsson has declined to comment on recent interrogations of the suspect. Results of the analysis of biological samples sent to Sweden more than three weeks ago are still being awaited.
