The Environment Agency of Iceland has decided to extend the closure of Fjaðrárgljúfur canyon. RÚV reported first. The area has been closed since 16 March due to extremely muddy conditions which make the walking paths unsafe.
Tourist traffic at the South Iceland canyon has been increasing, in part due to a 2015 Justin Bieber music video filmed at the location. The canyon will remain closed to visitors for nine additional weeks and is scheduled to reopen no later than 1 June.
The environment agency has appointed a landscape architect to assess what actions must be taken before the area is reopened. The agency asks tour operators to inform customers of the decision and express the importance of respecting the closure.
