Explosion in RV at Gas Station

An explosion occurred this afternoon when a tourist appears to have been making the mistake of pumping methane gas into a propane tank from a recreational vehicle at the N1 gas station in Ártún, Reykjavík, RÚV reports. Methane is used to power vehicles, while propane is used for gas grills. The tank itself exploded.

Fire fighters are working to clean up the area. No fire resulted, but fire fighters arrived to turn off the methane and to control a gas leak from the RV, caused by the explosion.

“It was a loud bang. Everything inside the RV went upside down and in all directions,” an eye-witness told mbl.is. He added that the man pumping the methane cut his foot, but that no serious injuries were noticed. The area was closed right away. The RV carries foreign license plates.

According to information from the capital area fire department, three people suffered minor injuries. The gas station was still closed half an hour ago.
