An attempt is being made today to break the Guinness world record in diaper changing and a group of Icelandic parents are getting involved too.
This is the second time that Icelanders are taking part in the event. Last year washable diapers were changed on 8,301 babies in one day, including 59 Icelandic babies.
“We want to draw attention to fabric diapers with this. Washable fabric diapers are more environmentally friendly, economical and good for the child,” says Helga Dögg Yngvadóttir, one of three people in charge of the event in Iceland.
At the beginning of this week 37 had already registered in Iceland and Helga says that every participant makes a big difference. Last year, for example, “If the Icelanders had not taken part, the record would not have been broken. Every bottom makes a difference.”
The Guinness Book of World Records dictates that those changing the diapers must be over 18 years-old and that the child may not be more than one meter long. The diapers used cannot be home-made. Participants must be photographed before and after the changes and there must be a sanctioned witness on site who ensures everyone sticks to the Guinness rules, according to Vísir.is.
The diaper changing event will be held at the Lygna Family Center at Síðumúli 10 in Reykjavík, with registration between 10.15 and 10.30. Participants are then directed to the marked out area and diaper changing will commence at precisely 11.00. Participants are therefore asked to arrive in good time.
“It’s going to be a fun day,” Helga says. “There will be a photographer on site, a raffle and food. We encourage everyone to sign up and participate with us.”
