Everton Keen to Buy Gylfi

Icelandic footballer Gylfi Þór Sigurðsson, currently a midfielder for the Welsh Premier League club Swansea City, could be signed by Liverpool-based Everton as early as today, The Guardian reports. He won’t come cheap: Swansea has priced the player, “who was directly involved in 22 Premier League goals last season” at 50 million pounds.

Everton has made a number of high-profile acquisitions recently, spending 100 million pounds just this summer to sign Wayne Rooney, Michael Keane, Sandro Ramírez, Jordan Pickford, Davy Klaassen, Henry Onyekuru and Nathangelo Markelo. The deal to pick up Gylfi is anticipated within the next day or so, as he and the rest of the Swansea squad are supposed to travel to the US on Thursday for a pre-season tour.

Gylfi has three years left on his Swansea contract, which was extended during the previous season. The team acknowledges the high price tag they’ve put on him, which head coach Paul Clement attributes to his value as a player. “Gylfi has been an excellent player here,” he remarked. “…He was happy to stay on here. At the moment he is a Swansea player and we have to carry on looking at it that way.”
