Events Held in Relation to Akureyri Winter Festival

The Winter Sports Festival in Akureyri, north Iceland, opened on February 6. Until March 21 various events will take place in relation to the festival and this weekend is no exception. Running, riding and a photo competition is coming up.

The local track and field association, UFA, is hosting a snow run today at 1 pm. Runners will follow a special track around the pond in front of the ice rink with various hindrances, such as snowdrifts.

The track will be open until 3 pm. The run is not an actual competition—each participant can decide with whom he or she wants to compete or whether the run is just about personal achievement.

There is no timing but judges are available for groups competing among themselves. Everyone will get a reward at the finish line.

At the Hamrar campsite on the outskirts of town, a snow photo competition will take place between 10 am and 4 pm. The entire family can participate.

In the evening, at 8 pm, a tournament in ice tölting will take place at the ice rink. Tölt is a gait unique to the Icelandic horse, which is especially beautiful to watch on ice. Tickets cost ISK 1,500 (USD 11.6, EUR 8.6). Children aged 12 and younger get free admission.

Tomorrow, a toboggan race for children will be held at Hamrar at 1:30 pm. There will also be guided walk around the area, beginning at 10 am. Walkers return to Hamrar between 2 pm and 3 pm.
