The goal is to award “IT that is of good use to people all over the world, and furthermore to contribute to the development of a global information society,” as stated on the University of Iceland’s website hi.is.

Jóhann Pétur Malmquist, professor of computer science at the University of Iceland and the competition’s administrator in Iceland, said the win was important as it draws attention to Icelandic entrepreneurship.

A total of 460 nominations, thereof six from Iceland, took part in this year’s competition. The awards are backed by the United Nations Development Programme and the European Union, among others.
