EU Membership Would Affect Farming in Iceland

Agriculture in Iceland would undergo extensive changes if Iceland would join the European Union, although at the same time the price of food products would drop because of cancellation of tariffs on foods.

The Farmers Association of Iceland is against joining the EU.

According to a news review by Morgunbladid, Finland and Sweden reached a special agreement with the EU on strengthening agriculture in their countries when they joined the union and Iceland is likely to be able to reach a similar agreement on agriculture.

EU membership is also likely to put increased emphasis on matters concerning the population of rural Iceland.
