Sindri Þór Stefánsson booked his plane ticket an hour before he escaped from Sogn open prison, RÚV reports. The flight was booked under a different name, but Sindri Þór paid for the ticket with his own credit card.
Sindri Þór escaped from prison on Tuesday and fled to Sweden by plane. He was being held on suspicion for his alleged part in a robbery of 600 computers which were specially fitted for Bitcoin mining. The police have estimated the worth of the loot to be around 200 million ISK (2 million $, 1.6 million €). An international warrant has been issued for his arrest and Icelandic police are now working with Swedish authorities to track him down.
Sogn is an open prison, with a minimum restriction on prisoner’s activities and movements, where low threat prisoner are trusted not to leave the premises. They are made aware of the fact that fleeing the premises has repercussions for their case. Gunnar Schram, the head police officer in the Southern Peninsula said that Sindri had some access to a computer and a phone.
Sindri Þór arrived at Keflavík airport by taxi three or four hours before his flight to Sweden. Police have not yet found the taxi—a silver Skoda Station—or the driver who took Sindri Þór to the airport.
Gunnar Schram said that he did not want to reveal the identity of the man whose name Sindri Þór’s flight ticket was purchased in, as police are still interviewing him. He says that police have some leads and remain hopeful of catching Sindri Þór.
