Sindri Þór Stefánsson, who escaped from an Icelandic prison last week, was arrested in Amsterdam yesterday, RÚV reports. He is expected to be transported back to Iceland within the next few days.
Sindri Þór escaped from a low-security prison in Southwest Iceland on Tuesday and fled to Sweden by plane. He was being held on suspicion for his alleged part in a robbery of 600 computers which were specially fitted for Bitcoin mining.
Ólafur Helgi Kjartansson, chief of police, would not say whether Sindri had handed himself over or was arrested against his will.
Þorgils Þorgilsson, Sindri’s lawyer, expects Sindri back in the country soon. “That’s hopefully in the next few days. But it could take a week, just over a week, if all goes well,” he told RÚV.
Þorgils says he does not know whether Sindri went straight from Sweden to Amsterdam not what took him to the city.
Hafþór Logi Hlynsson shared a picture of himself with Sindri and a third man in Amsterdam on Instagram yesterday. The picture bore the hashtag #teamsindri. Hafþór has received over 15 criminal convictions, including for drug-related offences and drug trafficking. He has since stated the picture is old and was not taken yesterday.
