Sulfur dioxide (SO2) gases emitted by the eruption in Holuhraun north of Vatnajökull glacier in the northeastern highlands are expected to drift to the west today, across Hveravellir on the Kjölur route and from Stykkishólmur in the north to Keflavík in the south.
According to the Icelandic Met Office’s forecast, the pollution could cover the entire capital region at some point today. A similar area is expected to be affected by the pollution tomorrow, as can be seen on the Met Office’s gas distribution maps.
Yesterday, residents in Skagafjörður, North Iceland, reported significant pollution with a brownish haze blocking the view, and on Friday, pollution levels were high in the southern East Fjords, as ruv.is reports.
