Eruption Lasted Three to Four Hours

The small fissure eruption in Holuhraun, which started shortly after midnight, lasted only three to four hours, according to geophysicist Páll Einarsson.

Páll said in an interview with RÚV that he agrees with earlier comments made by fellow geophysicist Magnús Tumi Guðmundsson that the eruption could be described more or less as an “accident.”

According to visir.is, all limitations on flying over the area have been lifted.

Seismic activity is ongoing. At 12:21 a magnitude 5.2 earthquake occurred roughly seven kilometers (four miles) north of Bárðarbunga at a depth of 9 km (5 miles). A magnitude 4.8 earthquake occurred at 11:15.
