New land is forming in Holuhraun and its vicinity. The biggest craters are rising higher up from the ground and a new lagoon and a waterfall could form when the lagoon builds a natural dam in Jökulsá glacial river. Scientists and others are exited by the development.
Previously the old lava field Holuhraun was neither well known nor very distinct in the area, mostly disappearing in the wasteland.
The new craters are much bigger and more magnificent than the old ones. They have now reached up to 70 meters (200 feet) high and will be easily recognizable in the area in the future.
Volcanologist Ármann Höskuldsson told vísir.is that the landscape forming in the battle between the new lava and the glacial river Jökulsá is equally exciting. He believes it is possible that the lava may dam the river and a lagoon will be formed above it. As the water level rises the river will find a way through the lava, possibly forming a waterfall.
The river might also find a new bed on the edge of the lava and erode it. This depends on how long the eruption lasts and how much magma flows up from the ground.
