An earthquake of magnitude 5.5 hit the northern rim of the Bárðabunga caldera this morning shortly after 3 am. This is one of the biggest earthquakes to hit the region since increased seismic activity was first recorded there on August 16.
Three other quakes of magnitude higher than 4.0 occurred in the past 24 hours, including one just before 11 pm last night, mbl.is reports. All in all about 500 earthquakes shook the area yesterday. Most of the minor quakes were by Dyngjujökull, Vatnajökull outlet glacier.
According to the Iceland Met Office there are no signs of the tremors ebbing out, if anything they seem to be increasing. Yesterday appeared to be calm, but now the action has picked up again, and the intrusive dike is lengthening, RÚV reports.
Iceland Review sent a team to the area last night and they should be approaching the Holuhraun eruption soon.
