Meteorologist Einar Sveinbjörnsson thinks the storm today might be on par with epic storms like the 1991 storm which literally lifted people and caused extensive property damage. The weather has already caused some disruption.
No Christmas lights were lit on official Christmas trees in many of the East Fjords (Eskifjörður, Reyðarfjörður, Fáskrúðsfjörður, Norðfjörður and Mjóifjörður). In Reykjavík the lights on the so-called Oslo tree (a gift from Oslo in Norway) were supposed to be lit today, but the ceremony has been postponed until an undecided date in the near future.
The storm has already begun and in many parts of the country search and rescue teams have been called out. This morning the author of this article went to Úlfarsfell mountain on the outskirts of Reykjavík and the weather there was already bad, windy, cold and raining hard, so that no one was walking on the popular hiking path.
