Environmental Disaster Narrowly Avoided as Oil Truck Flips Over

A potentially serious pollution accident was narrowly avoided yesterday, as an oil truck carrying 3000 liters of diesel flipped over on a bridge in Northern Iceland. The incident happened in Hörgárdalur valley in north Iceland, not far from Akureyri. The driver of the vehicle has been transported to a hospital in Akureyri. He is not believed to have been seriously injured.

Representatives from the police, fire department, rescue volunteers, as well as moving cranes all turned up at the site of the accident. The first priority was to prevent the large quantity of oil present in the truck from spilling into the river below. Fibre-optic internet lines and electrical lines running through the area were additional concerns and the reason for such a variety of people showing up at the scene.

As of 14:09 Icelandic time, Reimar Viðarsson, a member of the Icelandic Association for Search and Rescue, told Vísir.is that the truck was back on its wheels. Luckily, next to no oil was spilled.
