Enthusiasts Flock to Iceland for EVE Online Festival

By Iceland Review

About 1,000 foreign visitors are expected to come to Iceland next weekend to participate in Fanfest, the harvest festival for the Icelandic multiplayer game EVE Online from CCP, which will be held in Laugardalshöll concert hall in Reykjavík.

The previous two years Fanfest was held in Loftkastalinn Theater and Hótel Nordica, but has outgrown those venues. “We won’t fill Laugardalshöll, but if the festival’s popularity will continue to grow we may need a larger venue for 2009,” CCP CEO Hilmar Veigar Pétursson told Fréttabladid.

“I can’t remember at the moment whether a larger convention has ever been held in Iceland, nothing except Airwaves has attracted more people,” Pétursson said. Nearly 2,000 foreign visitors and journalists came to attend the Iceland Airwaves festival this October 17 to 21.

Most of the foreign visitors attending Fanfest come from Britain, but others come all the way from Australia and New Zealand. “People come here to meet the people they’ve been playing with, meet us who designed the game and talk about what is happening in the world,” Pétursson said.

“It is much rather a celebration of the EVE Online game itself than for people to come here for something particular they want to see,” Pétursson concluded.
