Energy Company Criticized for Manmade Quakes

A new report by an earthquake report expert group strongly criticizes Reykjavík Energy (OR) for the earthquakes created when pumping water into boreholes for the production of geothermal energy at their Hellisheiði power plant outside Reykjavík.

The strongest quakes have been of a magnitude of 3. Residents of Hveragerði and Mosfellsbær have complained about the seismic activity.

According to Sveinbjörn Björnsson, a member of the working group, the manmade quakes had been stronger than expected and stronger than those experienced in Iceland in the past, ruv.is reports.

However, the earthquakes have reportedly reduced in number and size in recent months.
