Emergency Services: Not Just Tourists Running into Trouble

Icelanders are not always better prepared than tourists when traveling around Iceland, according to Tómas Gíslason, assistant director of the national emergency line 112. Icelanders are running into trouble just as often as tourists, Tómas said in a radio interview on Rás 2 this morning, adding that travelers must take road closures seriously.

There are many organized tours run all year round, resulting in more people out and about, Tómas said. According to Tómas, people must be prepared for changes in the weather and must have the proper equipment on hand, such as a first aid kit in case things go wrong.

Tómas also mentioned that many tourists use cars with GPS devices whereas many Icelanders do not have a GPS in their cars. Tómas said that it was not enough to trust that things will not go wrong but rather that people need to be prepared.
