Two men escaped without injury when their small plane made an emergency landing in Súðavíkurhlíð, east of Ísafjörður, shortly before noon today. This was reported by Vísir. The plane took off from the airport in Ísafjörður, but quickly ran into trouble, requiring an emergency landing.
West Fjords police were notified right away. The officer on duty believes the men are extremely lucky not to be injured. The plane is not damaged, according to RÚV. The men landed it on a narrow road right between a steep mountain and the ocean. Police say it took great skill to land the plane in such a location. Luckily, the road by Súðavíkurhlíð is not a busy one. A driver, who came by shortly after the landing, was surprised beyond words to see a plane on the road.
The road from Súðavík to Ísafjörður goes through Súðavíkurhlíð.
